Bridging Education and the World of Work

President
Midwest ACE President,
O. Ray Angle
President's Message:
Enticing Gus

My neighbors are currently vacationing and I am taking care of their pet rabbit, Gus. Gus has a really snazzy cage with two floors, a litter box, and a fenced-in play area that extends out about four feet from the front door of his cage onto the hardwood flooring of the spare bedroom. He gets fresh water and rabbit food every day, hay treats as needed and two yogurt treats a day because he is a big bunny (small bunnies only get one a day). Gus is living the bunny high life!

However, there is one little problem...

The 2005 Trends in Recruiting Conference is Here
It's that time of year again. Do your days look like this?

Employers...Your managers need more talent, your competitors are snapping up your students, and everyone is asking questions like:

College Career Professionals...Reporters are calling, parents are hovering, and everyone is asking questions like:
  • Is the economy really getting better, if so, where are the jobs?
  • How does globalization affect my organization?
  • What are employers really looking for in new hires?
  • How do I capture students' attention?
  • Who are these millennials and how do I motivate them?
  • What does productivity mean to me?
  • How do I speak to a reporter with finesse?

I have complete confidence that the speakers and the report out of Michigan State presented by Dr. Phil Gardner will shed some light on these exact questions at the 12th Annual Trends in Recruiting Conference. Being armed with this extremely helpful data will not only help me feel more comfortable when faced with this year's graduating students, it will also help the students with whom I work. In addition, I'll be able to network with my colleagues and learn how they are dealing with these difficult economic times. Sounds like a win-win situation if you ask me.

Midwest ACE Leaders Lay Groundwork for Five Year Plan
Can you see Homer Simpson drooling "strategic planning" as if such a meeting could be as appealing as a box of donuts? Does the phrase "strategic planning" get your blood pumping? If not, you probably have not seen such a planning session as the one produced by Midwest ACE President O. Ray Angle (Webster University).

Building a Career Portfolio Program
With the race to digitalize all kinds of information, three colleges in Minnesota have found a way to make paper portfolios cutting edge. Addie Turkowski of St. Cloud State University, Margie Giauque of Bemidji State University, and Vicki Decker of Winona State University showed how their universities have combined a career portfolio and an academic portfolio into one vehicle in their Milwaukee 2005 Conference workshop "Portfolio for Academic and Career Planning - integrating the PAC into the first year experience."

Conducting a Career Services Review: Case Studies of Large and Small Universities
Providing top-notch services in an efficient and effective manner is a concern for all university career centers. Participating in a review process can be a great way for any office to see what they are doing well and what they could do differently. To help members facilitate their own review process, the members of the NACE Assessment Publications Review Task Force (Larry Routh, Ph.D., University of Nebraska; Sam Ratcliffe, Ph.D., Virginia Military Institute; Jeff Garis, Ph.D., Florida State University; and, Jane Linnenburger, Chair, Bradley University) presented an overview of how the career services review process works for large and small universities and an external reviewer's perspective on the process.

How Penn State Built a New Career Center:
Forty-four interviewing rooms all with wireless internet access and each at least-100-square feet, dedicated programming space, offices for graduate students, natural daylight from skylights, and windows (that open!) in every full-time staff office...Does this sound like the impossible dream of all university career center staff members? We'll dare to dream...

Job Search Boot Camp Kick-Starts Students into Action
"What is the most outrageous excuse a student has given you for not starting a job search?" asked Elizabeth Dexter-Wilson at the beginning of her Job Search Boot Camp presentation. Here are some of the best answers:
'I'm waiting until after Mardi Gras because I'll know I'll have a hangover."
"I think my boyfriend is about to propose and I'm not sure where we will be living."
"My mom didn't tell me to do it."

Dexter-Wilson identified several factors that may contribute to a "Last Minute Syndrome." One is ...

Benchmark Best Practices: Campus Career Fairs and Recruitment Presentations
Are career fairs a thing of the past? How do graduating seniors in 2005 view the recruitment process? Mary Scott of the Scott Resource Group gave a summary of the findings of this year's survey as well as comparative data over the past four years to shed light on these questions. The survey drew responses...

Beyond Transferable Skills: Preparing Visual Arts Students for Satisfying Careers

Designing a Campus Recruiting Program Using Six Sigma Tools
Six Sigma, as it is used at many organizations, is the measure of quality that strives for near perfection. Student Marketing on Less Than a Shoestring
How to meet the challenge of marketing to students is an issue commonly addressed by both career professionals and employers - often with no good answers to the many questions that present themselves.
