Job Description:

The UIS Career Development Center is accepting applications for the position of Career Counselor. Under general supervision of the Assistant Director for the Career Development Center, the Career Counselor provides a full range of career development services to students, alumni, and prospective students. Requirements include a Master’s degree in Counseling, Higher Education, Psychology, Social Work, or related area of study and two years of experience in career/mental health counseling with the ability to assist students/alumni in the development of realistic career goals and job search strategies.

Job Requirements:

Required Qualification:

  • Minimum of master's degree in a counseling-related field.
  • Two years of experience in career/mental health counseling with the ability to assist students/alumni in the development of realistic career goals and job search strategies.
  • In-depth knowledge of counseling and career development theories and techniques with a complete understanding of the interrelationship between mental health and career development concerns.
  • Experience in individual and group career counseling techniques with knowledge in distance counseling.
  • Demonstrate general abilities in establishing a rapport with a diverse population.
  • Ability to assess career barriers, career maturity, and decision-making skills.
  • Assist individuals in identifying influencing factors in career decision making, such as friends, family, educational opportunities and finances.
  • Knowledge in alternative approaches to career development and planning needs for individuals with disabilities, minorities, older job-seekers, and first-generation students, etc.
  • Knowledge of current employment trends and career planning materials.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills firmly rooted inability to relate to the diversity of constituents.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to be innovative and show initiative while understanding the concept of student development an student learning outcomes.
  • Thorough understanding of and commitment to the goals and responsibilities of the centralized career services concept.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, management and training abilities, and knowledge in public relations concepts.Preferred Qualifications:
  • Holds one of the following credentials: Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC), National Certified Counselor (NCC), Board Certified Career Counselor (BCC), Distance Credentialed Counselor (DCC), Board Certified TeleMental Health Provider (BC-TMH), Certified Career Counselor (CCC), or Certified Career Services Provider (CCSP).
  • Career services experience in higher education.
  • Computer Literacy: Proficiency in career development technical guidance systems such as Focus, Nacelink, Symplicity, Optimal Resume, Going Global; Experience in distance counseling practices as established by the Center for Credentialing and Education.
