Job Description:

Status: Exempt Full-time position 12 month schedule Reports To: Associate Director, Career Coaching

Overview: Meets regularly with students regarding all aspects of career development and job search. This includes using techniques and presenting resources appropriate for each student’s stage in the career development process; administering and interpreting career assessments; partnering to explore majors and careers; assisting in the pursuit of internships, full-time positions, service opportunities, and graduate/professional school admittance. Gives workshops and presentations to small and large audiences on a variety of career and job search topics. Develops relationships with faculty, administrators, and employers in specific academic and industry areas and provide services related to those same areas. Works collaboratively with colleagues within CORE in addition to students and families, faculty, staff, and administrators. Other duties assigned on an as needed basis and may include long-term, large-scale projects requiring project management skills and the ability to learn new information and skills.

Job Duties:

  1. Collaborate with students in identifying needs and reasons for seeking services; identify and understand their personal characteristics and life experiences related to career development, and identify and understand their career decision making processes
  2. Identify, select, and implement career coaching interventions and techniques appropriate to student goals
  3. Administer, score, interpret, report, and record findings from career assessment instruments appropriately
  4. Develop student-centered relationships with students using basic career coaching techniques such as listening, reflection, and empathic understanding
  5. Deliver career coaching services through a range of approaches, including individual, drop-in, and group appointments; workshops; and other programs
  6. Keep abreast of current sources and use of career, occupational, and employment information in providing students with career coaching services
  7. Maintain and communicate a knowledge base of occupational, career, and job information resources and technologies as well as an understanding of the labor market, employment trends, and recruiting strategies and techniques
  8. Provide basic consultation to students on job-search tools and strategies, including resume writing, developing cover letters and job-campaign correspondence, interviewing, networking, and making connections with employers
  9. Serve as liaison to academic and nonacademic departments and organizations on campus, maintaining close ties to faculty and staff
  10. Establish and develop relationships with appropriate academic and nonacademic areas and close ties to faculty and staff
  11. Develop programming and resources to engage parents and families in the career development and job-search processes of their students
  12. Demonstrate a personal and professional commitment to diversity
  13. Provide support and assistance to international students seeking jobs domestically and internationally
  14. Other duties as assigned.

 

Job Requirements:

Education Minimum of a Master's degree in a college student personnel or counseling-related field highly preferred. BA with equivalent related work experience may be substituted.

Experience:

  • 1+ years of demonstrated career coaching, counseling, or advising; career services, academic counseling or related experience strongly preferred.
  • College career services experience preferred
  • Experience working with young adults or in a higher education setting is preferred as well as a passion and understanding of the Liberal Arts setting.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent communication skills with a focus on meeting the needs of a diverse student population.
  • Proficient with of Microsoft Office Products, social media and web applications; knowledge of Handshake career management system a plus.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work with limited supervision. Ability to develop excellent rapport with students in a one on one setting.
  • Ability to multi-task with commitment to excellence.
  • Ability to think creatively and develop programs to meet the changing needs of a diverse student base.
  • This position requires the ability to travel out of town periodically to represent the College at relevant higher education professional association meetings and career fairs, estimated at 10-15 days per year.
  • Evening and weekend work is required on a periodic basis.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift 25 pounds on a frequent basis. Also required is the ability to listen, hear, speak, climb stairs, bend, stoop, and stand for intermittently long periods of time.

Special Requirements: Ability to travel out of town periodically to represent the College at relevant higher education professional association meetings and career fairs, estimated at 10-15 days per year. Required to periodically give evening and weekend presentations. Successful candidates must pass a criminal background check.
